The airplane was filling up with passengers and Lamont Gay was beginning to get nervous. He was looking forward to returning to Los Angeles for the Christmas holidays to his wife and kids after a long week in Phoenix solidifying a new commercial account for the airline. However, he knew if the plane was indeed overbooked--- he would have to sacrifice his seat, 14A, and wait for a later flight. Having been in the airline's marketing department for almost three years, Mr. Gay was looking forward to a possible promotion in the coming months that would make him stationary in Los Angeles--- enabling him to spend more time with his family.
But as the seats began to fill up and the steady stream of passengers continued, Mr. Gay realized there was little hope of continuing on this flight. He grabbed his carry-on and quickly deplaned, talking to the gate agent who promised him a seat on the next available plane.
Rick Roverton was at the gate at the same moment, a last minute check-in, and after saying good-bye to his wife, anxiously boarded the plane--- happy to find his empty seat in 14A. Rick was a youthful looking middle-aged man, but as he looked out the plane window staring at the terminal building, his face suddenly proclaimed a tortured soul. He sighed in relief, playing with the wedding ring across his finger, his mind racing.
The main cabin flight attendant Suzie Winnie was counting seats with the end of her chewed Bic pen cap, occasionally smiling her game show smile at passing passengers.
"Well, hello darlin'." Suzie said in her Texas accent, smiling at a little girl who stared at Suzie's uniform in Cinderella fascination. Looking down at her reservation list of airline personnel on board, Suzie's boarding instinct knew she was overbooked and would have to begin asking people to de-plane.
Looking at her list, Suzie squeezed through the aisle to seat 14A, looking directly at Rick Roverton.
"Hi there," chirped Suzie, "Are you Gay?"
Rick Roverton froze, a terrified face suddenly radiating to the surface.
"I'm...uh...what?" mumbled Rick, terribly confused.
"Are you Gay?"
"Well...uh..."
"Darlin', are you okay?"
"Yes, I am...but...well..." and like a fire hydrant knocked off a curb, the force of something great pushing past the surface, suddenly Rick Roverton stood up, stared Suzie down and with great pride, said loudly, "Yes! I am gay!"
"Then sweetie, you'll have to get off the plane." Said Suzie, smiling, her white teeth shining brightly like a 100 watt bulb.
"Excuse me?"
"Sweetie, we're overbooked. Get off the plane."
"I have to leave...?"
"Mr. Gay. You know the rules."
Mr. Gay? As in, the only gay? Rick had heard of discrimination, but never did he think it would be so blatant. Resolved however to cooperate with Suzie's bizarre request, he reached for his carry-on and started to leave his seat, when suddenly behind him a woman's hand clamped down on his shoulder.
"Just a moment," Boomed the stocky woman with short hair, rising from her seat, staring at Suzie. "I am a LESBIAN! Surely you can't kick us ALL off the plane?!"
