Fran

March 23, 1996

Ever go out on a second date with someone you know you don't like, but there's nothing on television and what the heck-- they asked? Callous, I know, but I was bored. Besides, the SWF was so entertaining before on an ego level that maybe she'd arrive looking like my prom picture?

The doorbell rang and I opened the door. Standing in front of me was me again, only this time slightly different with more make-up and a tad preppier.

She had become some kind of strange combo platter of me and someone else. I felt relieved because at least that meant she was dating other women.

"Hi." she said, smiling with her impressive grin. She was cute-- full of boundless energy. And that bod. I only wish I looked that good. Or do I? Fran, don't go there.

"I know we talked about going to a movie." she said. "But what do you think about going dancing?"

Now THAT could be interesting-- and entertaining.

Palace Athena was crowded. After all, it was Saturday night. I saw a few friends and did the introducing thing when SWF asked me what I wanted to drink. I knew whatever I ordered, she'd have the same.

So I decided to blow her mind. "I'll have a Long Island Iced Tea."

She paused, eyes suddenly confused.

"I don't think they serve Snapple here." she said.

A friend of mine looked at her, looked at me, and I quickly nodded to ignore her, smiling. "The bartender will know what it is, baby."

The SWF nodded with that television smile and bounced to the bar. And sure enough, I saw her order two Long Island Iced Teas.

I looked out at the crowd and saw girls, girls, girls. Was my soulmate here? Aaagh, stop it. Just leave that alone.

The SWF arrived, handing me my drink.

"I'm amazed it really tastes like iced tea. It really does."

She was sucking her drink like water when suddenly I flashed on the fact I'd never seen this woman drink before. What would she do? Would she call the mother ship of her alien planet? Would she clone into triplets before my eyes?

She started bouncing her body to the music and then waved to someone in the room.

"Excuse me." And off she went, disappearing into the crowd-- drink in hand.

I moved towards an empty space by the bar, watching the assortment of beautiful women pass by.

When across the room I saw someone and was amazed at my bodily reaction to her-- involuntarily-- of my stomach dropping.

Butterflies. Goosebumps.

I looked at my drink-- only a quarter of it gone. Funny how my gut instinct told me something but I wanted to reason it away.

At that moment, I realized one thing-- I had feelings for this girl.

Uh-oh.

The SWF approached me. "Drink up. I'm going to have another one." She said, moving back to the bar. What had I done?

I knew I was going to have to have "the talk" with SWF and tell her it was over. That I just wanted to be "friends" and not a clone.

I stepped closer to the dance floor, watching the girl. Should I tell the SWF that I was getting a ride home with someone else? Someone across the room, standing alone, looking absolutely stunning.

It was someone all right. Some beautiful girl.

A girl named Thea.
