Greg

June 13, 1996

Dr. Mince wasn't pleased.

Donna and I had broken curfew and had stayed out all night.

"What I should do with the two of you?" he asked me during my therapy session. "You to broke the rules of Haven House. My rules. These rules are meant to protect you, Greg. Do you think that I should let everybody here go out and fornicate whomever they please? Isn't that what brought you here in the first place? Isn't that why you tried to kill yourself?"

"Yes. But..."

"But what?"

"We didn't do anything. Maybe we wanted to make love, but we didn't. We talked about love and other things."

He raised an eyebrow. "What other things?"

I felt like I was at the principal's office when I was seven and got caught playing 'I'll-show-you-mine-if -you-show-me-yours' with Jimmy Porter in the boys'room. I stood there staring at my feet. "Nothing."

"You're lying to me," he said, his voice starting to get higher in anger. "Don't lie to me Gregory. You don't want me to give you and Donna a treatment would you?"

I could feel the electricity surging through my body at the mention of the word treatment. "We were talking about marriage and stuff."

Dr. Mince smiled when he heard the word marriage. "To each other?"

"More in general. We talked about how our feelings for each other. How we were taught that we were supposed to get married, buy a house and live happily ever after. Our parents would lecture us about the virtues of marriage even though they're own relationships sucked."

Dr. Mince looked over at me. "They just didn't work hard enough to save their marriages. I've been married for thirty-four years and even though we've had our troubles, we worked through them. My wife and I believe in the traditional things. You, Donna and your parents were deceived by the liberal media that if it feels good do it. If it doesn't, find something that does."

The bell went off, ending our session.

Two orderlies entered Dr. Mince's office and grabbed me by the arms.

"Take him to the treatment center."

"No!" I cried out as they dragged me out of the office.

"Gregory," Dr. Mince said. "You two broke my rules. I want you to realize that you can never do that."

He closed the door in my face.
