Andrew

Jan 6, 1997

I was at the Beverly Hilton in Eric's parents room, trying to fill them in on what had been happening.

It was difficult trying to be clear without scaring them. I let them know about Mark Fitzgerald and the public sex I found them in. I explained he'd been acting distant and remote-- more and more recently. I told them that JD Clein had always thought Eric was hiding something, ever since college.

"I knew Luigi would have problems...when he decided to become this, this Eric Lewis person." said his mother.

Maybe she was right. I mean, re-inventing yourself is a bizarre act because what happens to the old person? Does Luigi Espinosa just disappear-- to be replaced by Eric Lewis?

Then I told them about Rebecca Granville, and how he had propositioned her, lied about being gay, and being in a relationship with me.

"But maybe Luigi is normal," she said, quickly realizing what she had inferred. "I'm sorry, Andrew. I don't mean normal, I mean...just that maybe he should be with a woman."

I was getting very tense when fortunately, Eric's father took over. "Mama, no matter what you want, or what you think Luigi should be-- our son is homosexual. He should be with a man. It doesn't matter what you and I want for him-- what matters is what he wants. We need to support both our son and Andrew."

Eric's mom nodded. She definitely understood.

But I couldn't help notice how much she wished things were different once Rebecca arrived. Clearly, Rebecca was her dream come true for what her son would marry-- rich, beautiful, intelligent...everything. Boy, it sure was working a number on my self-esteem.

Rebecca took control-- thank heavens.

"Your son is deeply disturbed, Mrs. Espinosa," she said. "He invited me to lunch and tried to convince me things were back to normal. He tried to wash the whole thing over as if it never happened. I could see quite clearly he was lying. Eric was trying to manipulate things to his own advantage, and I think he's been doing that for years. I think he now hates me."

I was stunned as her news. I didn't even know they'd spoken lately.

"Andrew-- I don't think I should be at the intervention. I think Eric might continue to lie and defend his actions if I'm there," she said.

"NO! I need you there. Rebecca, I can't do this without you," I said.

She heard my fear and knew I was getting very close to calling the whole thing off. Thankfully, she gave in and said she would be available. Eric's parents too, were so supportive and understanding. Even his mother knew this was for the best. She knew her son was in trouble and needed our help.
