I first noticed it when I started my work out.
I did some stretching exercises and saw him in the mirror.
I caught his eye; he smiled and waved.
I went to the free weights and grabbed two dumb-bells, and started flies. I got my rhythm, so I closed my eyes, concentrating, pinpointing which muscles were working.
I felt myself breaking into a sweat.
I also sensed someone sit down beside me.
I opened my eyes and saw him next to me.
I put down the weights and went to the incline board to work my abs.
Ninety-eight.
I was feeling pretty good.
Ninety-nine.
These ab crunches were a snap.
One hundred.
I stopped and saw his grinning face, staring down at me, from between my spread legs.
I was swimming, doing laps.
The water felt cool against my flesh as I cut my way through the pool.
I couldn't get him out of my head. Why was he doing this? Why not go bother some other guy? This was stupid. I turned, put my feet on the wall and shot myself forward.
I started to think about tomorrow.
I hoped Richard would hire me. Thirty bucks an hour to film people sue each other. Richard probably has partners. I could work for them. I could branch out and make some real money.
I started thinking about my father.
Maybe I'll call him in a couple of days.
We could go out and have lunch.
Maybe he's here now. He said he's been by and seen me here. I can't even remember his face.
I once found old baby pictures of me. My Mother had cut my Father out the pictures, every last one. All that remained was his left hand. A gold band around his ring finger.
I will call him...soon.
I climbed out of the pool and looked for my towel.
"Looking for this?"
He stood there holding my towel.
I stood there shivering. "What do you want?"
"Nothing...yet," Steve said and threw me the towel.
