You can only see Catalina in the clear air of winter, but there she is, 22 miles across the sea...
I'm loving my office.
Too bad I'll never be in it.
A big basket of tiger lilies with a card that reads, "Dr. Lewis, Welcome to Granville Sports Medicine."
Class. Real class.
Another basket of lemons. Lemons??? What the hell... the card reads, "I'm sour as hell but good luck, we'll miss you!" It's signed, Krantz... She's got some class too, I admit. And a great sense of humor.
I'll miss the old girl.
I must have been sitting here for an hour, just watching the sun setting off the ocean -- the sky a brilliant palette of reds and purples and oranges...
"Dr. Lewis -- sorry to bother you but your mother is on the phone."
My mother -- how the hell did she -- ?
"Momma?"

"Hi, darling! I wanted to be the first to congratulate you, so I called information for Beverly Hills and got your number. Luigi, I'm so proud of you! And I have good news...remember Poppa and I were coming to see you in the spring?? Poppa got a frequent flyer thing from a customer at the shop, old Mr. Danziger who owed us money 'cause we gave him a deal on scrod for a bar mitzvah dinner; and so he thanked us with a trip to anywhere in the continental U.S. and of course we chose Los Angeles because that's where you live but we have to use tickets before the end of January so we're coming early.....we were gonna surprise you but Daddy said, "no, don't surprise Luigi, you'll give him a heart attack!" So, I'm calling to tell you! I'm gonna cook for the next three weeks and bring all your favorite things on the plane 'cause I called the airlines and they said they had refrigeration on board and of course I could bring whatever I wanted so isn't that wonderful, Luigi? Isn't that just the best news, Luigi...Luigi? Luigi are you there...."
I'm here, Ma... I'm right here.
