"Eric, Greg'll keep an eye on the place while we're at work. He's totally dependable and you know the crime rate has risen around here a lot lately. I'm gonna -- we're both gonna feel so much more secure with someone living here --- Eric? Eric."
Hours later, I'm still begging - -I call him at work.
"Donny, put me through, it's a crisis"....I'm on hold for a full ten minutes, I'm sure he's doing this on purpose. Finally --
"Eric, please. I know you're packing up and it's weird there today -- but listen to me for just a second...I already promised Greg and he's completely on his own and he has no one else to turn to....Eric, it's over between Greg and I. Jesus, that was so long ago and it lasted about five minutes! Trust me, Eric. Greg and I are just friends."
All this while Mark Fitzgerald hovers in somewhere deep in my consciousness...I'm having a hard time saying the word "trust" lately. But Greg's right, there's no reason on earth why Eric needs to find out anything about Mark and me.
I try my final attempt.
"Eric, we got an invitation to my sister Patty's wedding! We, not I...we. Isn't that great? You gotta see the invitation, all engraved...inviting Andrew McKinley and Eric Lewis...Yeah, someday, we gotta do this. Could you imagine how great it'd be?...Of course I could make a commitment like that. I love you Eric....I really do."
It worked....Eric finally says yes to Greg moving into the guest house. Yes, with great reservation -- but yes!
