Pat Buchanan, the reactionary GOP anti-choice, racist,homophobicNixon pundit residing in the wealthy pocket of the ChristianCoalition, scored big in Tuesday's New Hampshire primaries. Hewalked away with the lead, narrowly beating out other Republicanposter boy, Bob Dole.
According to the papers, there was a record turn-out. Mom and PopSixPack, who usually sit at home, drunkenly watching old re-runsof "Bay Watch," came out in droves to throw their small-mindedlevers for good ol' Pat.
Why the popularity?
I still get chills when I remember Buchanan's hateful RepublicanConvention speech decrying single mothers, pro-choicers, liberals,feminists and gays to the resounding "SEIG HEIL's" of the blue-suited, blank-eyed, rednecked whiteboys assembled on theconvention floor.
Don't chalk up Buchanan to some fringy element hiding under arock. When he speaks his mind, he connects with the minds of muchof the pubic because he speaks his mind honestly, something othercandidates (including Clinton) can't be trusted to do.
He resents paying for other people's mistakes (abortion,welfare)He thinks waiting to buy a gun is unconstitutional. He wantshomos to stay out of the armed forces. He doesn't care about AIDSfunding. He opposes affirmative action. He believes people shouldbe able to discriminate against whom they like. He's anisolationist, wants to ban all abortions, blames immigrants forthe loss of jobs in this country and wants to abolish theDepartment of Education.
A lot of these sentiments appeal to the grumpy guy who yells athis TV set every night during the evening news. BecauseBuchanan is a bigot and doesn't care who knows it, that "littleguy" finally has a voice. A voice that gets very little criticismconsidering the trash that spews out of it.
It's easy to compare Buchanan to Hitler because they're bothpopulist, but it can be a facile comparison--he's not calling forthe mass murder of people who have views different than his.
Of course, he claims Hitler's "an individual of great courage" andcalled the Senate an"Isreali-occupied territory."
Still, I'm not worried...yet. Before Hitler went after the Jews,he banned abortion, burned books, destroyed artwork he thought wasindecent and put homosexuals in jail.
