Eric

February 9, 1996

Through the bathroom wall, first thing in the morning, I hear them. They don't know it but I hear them -- loud and clear.

"She's beautiful, Manny. She's the one, I can feel it."

"Oh, Mama -- stop it. There's time for Luigi so stop pressuring him on this. They're already fighting. Don't drive them further apart."

Eric listening at the wall to his parents

"How many times did I tell you 'it's over'? They're in love! We're gonna go out to dinner tonight and you're gonna pay the bill, Manny. And you know why? Because they're gonna be so happy together."

Not only would I never even consider having sex with Frannie-- but this woman wouldn't even think of it.

I wonder why it's so damn important to Mama that I be married, that I bring kids onto this planet? Drew and I could adopt a crack baby-- perhaps Mama could babysit?

Finally, my father chimes in...

"We are not gonna be a problem anymore for poor Luigi once we go home tomorrow. He's a grown man, Mama. He doesn't need us in this. If he wants advice, he can go to his friends-- he can go to Andrew."

"Achhhhh, that boy. I don't trust him and neither should you. I have seen the way he looks at Luigi."

I freeze. My toothbrush is stuck in my mouth and suddenly my hands hold me up against the bathroom sink. They-- KNOW! I feel sick. I feel like dying. I can't move the toothbrush because I'll puke if I do.

"That Andrew, the demon, doesn't believe in this thing with Luigi and Frannie. He thinks Luigi can do better."

"Honestly, I do too, Mama. I think Frannie is a nice girl, but where's the love? Maybe they're better friends."

"You're being ridiculous. Tonight it's gonna be just the four of us. It's our last night here and it's gonna be perfect!"

Their last night -- the only positive thing she's said!
