It was one of those amazing days in Los Angeles. Clear blue skies, some giant thunderheads above the Santa Monica Mountains, air amazingly clean and a slight breeze off the Pacific.

We were doing a dinner for three hundred in the Palisades, near the coast. Outdoors, sit down, and the greatest group of people-- an eclectic mix of film industry folk, old money people from back east, and some new young stars who were all in the director's movie.

I always loved bumping into those hot, young male TV stars that were straight but loved the attention of gay men. Those actors were so self-absorbed, they accepted stares from everyone. And I had so much fun hiding behind being a caterer-- polite, solicitous, but underneath-- a sexy George Clooney stare. they ate it up.

And they ate up the food, too. JD had done the menu and had gone wild. Lobsters, steaks, corn on the cob, tons of fresh seafood, pasta salads, amazing breads-- a casual dinner that cost as least twenty thousand!

We'd assembled our favorite crew-- Billy, Dana, Tina, Derk, Chance, Koo Koo. This was actually the first time JD and I had worked together since we usually spilt up our jobs. But he was free and wanted to help out. What a great time we were having.

The sun was great, the pool was totally inviting-- and then the director came up to JD and me and smiled:

"You two have done the best damn party I've ever had! Thank you!"

W said we were thrilled to do it.

"How long have you two been together?" he asked.

We were immediately thrown, both of us. Silenced! We didn't know what to day...finally, JD found a few words..."No, we're not a couple."

"Come on! yes you are," the director laughed. "And if you're not, you should be-- you two are amazing together, my wife and I were watching you both set up. I know it's just catering but you two are like dancers-- effortless-- and I really think it's because you love doing this. Seriously, you're at least dating, aren't you?"

We were silenced again.

Luckily, Koo Koo came up and asked for me to give him a hand. I excused myself-- and knew that JD and the director were watching me go. I even heard JD speak softly to him, though I couldn't make out what he was saying.

Hours later, after the crowd thinned, the director insisted JD, me and the crew take a swim. We were about to demure, but the team heard the invitation and like a flock of ducks-- there were in the water.

Well...

If you can't beat 'em-- join 'em.

Twenty naked cater-waiters in the water. The director and his wife joined us for the plunge-- it was amazing. So Hollywood.

And JD there...all the time...all the time.

God, it felt good to laugh. It had been so long.
